Anaren Delivers First Production Units In Support Of U.s. Navy’s Air And Missile Defense Radar Program

Syracuse, NY | Feb. 19, 2015 – Anaren, Inc. announced today that it has delivered its first production units of a passive beamforming network to Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems in support of the U.S. Navy’s next-generation Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR). The delivery of this hardware is a key milestone in the initial Engineering and Manufacturing Development (E&MD) contract. Raytheon awarded the subcontract to Anaren in March of 2014, which extends through March, 2015 and is part of the larger Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) subcontract potentially worth up to $110 million over ten years. Following the completion of LRIP, full-scale production will commence and is expected to last for roughly 20 years. AMDR is the U.S. Navy's next generation integrated air and missile defense radar planned for the DDG 51 Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

Raytheon is prime contractor on the Navy program, responsible for the design, development, integration, and testing of the new, highly scalable, and energy-efficient advanced radar system for the detection of ballistic missiles and air/surface targets. Anaren is a subcontractor, tasked with providing its unique beamformer technology and packaging techniques – important tools in helping the radar achieve its mission requirements. The majority of work under the E&MD subcontract and anticipated future subcontracts is expected to be performed at Anaren’s East Syracuse, NY facility, with support from its facilities in Salem, NH and Littleton, CO.

AMDR, officially designated AN/SPY-6, is the next-generation integrated air and ballistic missile defense radar for the U.S. Navy, filling a critical capability gap for the surface fleet. It is the first truly scalable radar, built with radar building blocks that can be grouped to form any size radar aperture, either smaller or larger than today’s SPY-1D(V). All cooling, power, command logic and software are scalable. This scalability allows for new instantiations, as well as back-fits, without significant development costs. Leveraging Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology to optimize power in a smaller size, taking up less space onboard, with lower power and cooling demands, AMDR provides the DDG 51 Flight III with service life allowances to support growth for adding capabilities or adapting for future threats. AMDR is comparable in price to the existing SPY-1 radar, and designed with high availability and reliability to reduce overall ownership cost.
